In Physics class, students constructed devices to safely land an egg from varying heights around the school grounds. Students had to account for gravity's effect on the egg and air resistance as the heights increased.
All but one, succeeded at the tallest height tested, the top of the football field bleachers.

8th Grade Students have started their Science Fair preparation. The Science Fair process lasts six weeks and the students are now into week four of the journey.
The first three weeks were spent 1) determining their central question to be investigated and formulating an hypothesis, describing how they expect the project to turn out; 2) designing a method that can be used to FAIRLY test each of the samples they choose to test; and 3) researching their topic to find out about the science concepts, principles, and laws that will dictate and help determine the final outcome of their testing.
Students are truly in the driver's seat as they develop the central questions for their project, in addition to formulating an hypothesis and designing a method for testing.
Science Fair is off to a great start this year!

4th Graders got a little competitive in their reading review game today.
Students played Gimkit as a way to review some of the skills that they had been working on in reading class.
Gimkit shares questions on each of the student's screens, once answered correctly they earn "money" and depending on what game setting in Gimkit, the money can be used for various things to help move the individual student to the leader board in the class.
Students love getting to review with this game.

They are asking for your help in reaching their goal! If you are interested in helping out or have questions, please contact Mr. Letsche at the High School for more information.
A rough estimate is the cost to fill a box is around $25. In addition there is also a suggested $10 donation for shipping.
There are instructions inside the boxes as to what things can and cannot go in the boxes. Also, information about age appropriate gifts.

Dr. Erin Anderson from Sheldon Family Dental Clinic in Sheldon came to talk with the seniors in Physics class on Friday about undergrad and graduate programs.
Students learned the difference between the two, what you can do with a degree from both and students were able to ask any other questions they had about college.
Thanks Dr. Anderson for coming in to talk to our students!

The Sheldon CAPS Program hosted the "Friday Coffee" for local Sheldon businesses this morning.
The CAPS program shared more about their program and what they do. CAPS has Student-Associates that develop problem-solving and professional skills to work on real projects for real business clients. This experience along with focused development on career exploration helps prepare each of them for their purpose beyond their life as a student.
CAPS is an example of how business, community and education can partner to produce personalized learning experiences that educate the workforce of tomorrow.
Thank you to the businesses that came to learn more about CAPS.

Great job second grade!

5th graders have had some exciting days of hands on learning in Ms. Nordahl's science class.
Students observed chemical reactions with elephant toothpaste. Students then had to find evidence from the experiment to prove why it was a chemical reaction in a write-up that followed.
The 5th graders also made Oobleck, which is a Non-Newtonian fluid. Students were able to see how Oobleck acts like a solid and a liquid.

Students in Biology did a cell membrane lab to observe its function, structure, and behavior. Students were able to learn the different concepts associated with cell membranes:
Concept 1: Membranes are fluid and flexible.
Concept 2: Membranes can self-repair.
Concept 3: Eukaryotic cells feature membrane bound organelles.
Concept 4: Proteins provide a passageway for large or electrically charged molecules.
This was a great lab for students to "see" what is happening in the cell.

3rd graders went on a mystery scavenger hunt during library class.
Students practiced looking for mystery books throughout the library.
They've practiced searching for books before, but this time Mrs. De Zeeuw and Mrs. Freymann added a twist—students had to hunt in the dark with flashlights to find the correct books.
