Seventh and eighth grade students attended the first middle school Computer Science Art Show.
They talked about their Pixel art and digital paintings, as well as admired the enlarged Mario mural designed by Parker Kamstra and assembled by seventh and eighth grade volunteers.
Congratulations to all eighth grade students for a successful semester of coding and computer science! Seventh graders begin their first semester of computer science this week.

The students in 1st grade got to experience the Star Lab last week.
1st graders were able to go inside of the lab and see how the night sky looks during different seasons. Such a great experience for our students to learn more about the stars.
Thanks to O'Brien County Conservation for making this possible for our students.

What is a Leader?
The Sheldon CSD School Board was able to learn from the East Elementary students and teachers what it means to be a leader at school.
Some of our Kindergarten through 4th grade students came to the board meeting last night and answered some questions from board members and building principals about how they work to be a good leader in their school each day.
The teachers also shared with the board how they implement leadership skills in their teaching each week to help the students grow their leadership skills.
We are proud of our students and teachers for their leadership work for our district!

The 8th graders have been learning how to solve different types of equations in math class.
One way that the students have practiced improving this skill is by using manipulatives to help them visualize the equation. This is a great way for our students to not only learn how to solve the equation, but also for them to "see" the equation and understand how and why they got the answer they did.
Great work 8th grade!

Across all of our buildings and classrooms chances are that if you walk into a classroom, you will see a "Bell Ringer" posted or being discussed at the beginning of class.
Bell Ringers are used to engage students in short assignments or assessments, review key concepts that have already been taught, stimulate classroom discussion or used to find misconceptions and misunderstandings students may have before the new lesson starts.
Whether its a number sorting activity in Kindergarten, identifying which words are verbs in 5th grade, asking your partner to make a list of pros and cons to a new school rule in 8th grade or completing a sample math problem at the high school our teachers do a great job of starting class off with Bell Ringers to get our students focused on the learning target for the day.

The 7th and 8th grade students just finished up their Archery Unit!
In this unit students worked on their hand and eye coordination in their attempts to hit the targets around the gym. Some of our students even hit the target right in the bullseye!
Way to go 7th and 8th grade.

The Sheldon High School FFA Chapter held a friendly toy drive competition between TA groups during the month of December at the High School.
The toys that were collected, were then donated to Love INC in Sheldon to be used for their Life Together gift room.
Thanks to all that donated to this amazing cause.

The 5th graders in Miss. Baumgartner and Mrs. Simonsen's English Class recently finished the historical fiction novel, "Number the Stars" which is about two young girls who lived during the Holocaust.
The 5th grade students then got the opportunity to connect with a living Holocaust survivor, Saul. Saul zoomed in with the class and was able to share his experience living through that time period. Saul also answered some of the questions that the 5th graders had.
This was a great opportunity for the students to learn about that time period through their reading and then talk to a person who lived through it.
Saul will be turning 99 next month. He currently lives in Los Angeles and moved there to be with his sister who also survived the Holocaust. Throughout his life he opened a painting company and also worked for an optical business.
Thank you to Jordan Dykstra, a former Sheldon graduate who helped with this connection. Jordan lived with Saul for awhile during his time in Los Angeles.

Sheldon will be running a 2-Hour Late start Thursday, January 5. There will be no AM preschool.
Thank you to those that have been working to get the roads clear and safe throughout this winter.

Students in Mr. Anderson's Chemistry Class performed a double replacement reaction lab between sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid.
They calculated the theoretical yield of the product sodium acetate by solving a stoichiometric calculation from the balanced chemical equation of the reaction.
Once the reaction was completed, the actual yield of sodium acetate was measured and students solved for the % yield of their reaction.
