O’Brien County Conservation recently hosted a poster contest for East Elementary fourth graders. Students were challenged to design a paper bag in any style they chose, as long as it followed the theme “Home Is Where the Habitat Is.”

Selah Bootsma was selected as the winner from our school and received a $10 prize from O’Brien County Conservation. Many outstanding posters were submitted, making it a very tough competition!

The Sheldon Community School District Board of Education meeting will take place tonight at the high school.

Sheldon High School band members who were selected by audition to participate in the Northwest Iowa Bandmasters Association (NWIBA) Honor Bands performed in Saturday’s concert at Eppley Auditorium on the Morningside University campus in Sioux City.

Your commitment to rehearsals and performance, along with representing Sheldon High School with pride is something to be very proud of. Well done to each student for achieving this honor and showcasing the strength of our band program. This marked Sadie Dietrick’s fourth year being selected for the NWIBA High School Honor Band—an outstanding achievement! 🎶

Sheldon Middle School students in Mrs. Gaard’s class participated in an engaging STEM activity where they designed and built their own balloon-powered cars. Using a variety of materials, students explored basic engineering and physics concepts such as force, motion, and problem-solving. The hands-on experience encouraged critical thinking and allowed students to see how STEM concepts apply in real-world situations, all while having fun and learning together.

Reminder: there will be no school Monday, January 19.

Sheldon Middle School students are working hard and staying focused as they complete assignments in their social studies and science classes. Their effort and dedication to learning are on display each day. Keep up the great work, middle school—your hard work is paying off!

Sheldon High School first semester final exams will take place next week. These exams are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and finish the semester strong.

During this time, it is essential that students arrive at school on time, are well rested, and come prepared and focused each day. Consistent attendance is especially important, as final exams follow a specific schedule and being present helps ensure a smooth and successful testing process for all students.

We appreciate families’ support in encouraging students to get plenty of rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and be ready to do their best. Thank you for helping us create a positive and productive testing environment as we wrap up the first semester.

Congratulations to this year’s East Elementary bookmark winners! We are so proud of all the students who participated and shared their creativity and imagination through their designs. Each bookmark showcased unique ideas, bright colors, and a love of reading, making the selection process a tough one.

Kindness in Action!
The focus of Guidance classes leading up to Christmas was spreading kindness & doing things to show others we care. East students worked on Random Acts of Kindness to spread the spirit of giving to as many people as possible. Kindergarten & 3rd Grade students teamed up for this “RAK,” making Christmas cards to send to members of our military.

Other projects have included thank you cards for custodians, secretaries, nurses, and Mr. G, Christmas-themed locker posters for students, and handmade teacher & staff gifts. Little hands, big hearts, and the spirit of giving is shining bright at East Elementary!

Sheldon Middle School students enjoyed an activity took during our December all-school assembly. One teacher from each grade, along with four students, was selected to “build a snowman” using the teacher as the snowman. A fifth team made up of all teachers also competed against the grade-level teams.

Each team was challenged to completely use three rolls of toilet paper, along with mittens, a hat, and a carrot, within the allotted time.

The 7th-grade team—featuring Mrs. Keizer as the snowman—claimed the win! The winner was determined by the loudest cheering section.

Sheldon Middle School hosted their biannual Lip Sync Contest before holiday break, and it did not disappoint! Seventh- and eighth-grade TAs prepared holiday-themed lip sync performances and took the stage for their peers. The competition was fun, fierce, and full of energy.

Mrs. Cabrera’s TA captured the 7th-grade title with their Talent Show Medley featuring Alvin and the Chipmunks, while Mrs. Nilson’s TA took the win with Dominick the Donkey. Thank you to everyone for the laughs, creativity, and great memories made! 🎤🎶
