Avenue of Flags / Sheldon

Volunteers are needed to help set up the Avenue of Flags:

Loyalty Day - May 1

Armed Forces Day - May 18

Memorial Day - May 27

June 14 - Flag Day

July 4 - Independence Day

September 2 - Labor Day

If you are willing to assist in setting up the flags, meet on the East Side of the Sheldon City Park at 7:00 A.M. on the above dates. Flags are retired at 5:30 P.M.

Hours served can be recorded on your Silver Cord Award Form.

FAFSA

It's time to complete Your FAFSA for the 2024-25 school year! The 2024-25 FAFSA is open at StudentAid.Gov. Completing the FAFSA is the only way to access the largest source of financial aid-federal student aid- to help you pay for your education.

Why file the FAFSA?

  • It's required by most colleges to qualify for financial aid.

  • It's Free! It will determine if you are eligible for FREE college money.

  • Some scholarships require the FAFSA in order to be eligible.

  • You must file the FAFSA in order to apply for federal student loans.

The FAFSA is set to open later in December, here's what you can do to be ready to complete it:

  • Make sure to create your StudentAid.gov account. (Remember your username and password!)

  • Find out if your parent(s) will need to be contributors to your form. If they do, each contributor needs their own password.

Hero Academy - Des Moines, Iowa / July 28 - August 3

The Iowa Hero Academy is launching this summer providing a one-of-a-kind opportunity for young women in Central Iowa to explore careers in firefighting, policing and the military.

The camp is run by the Des Moines Police Department, the Des Moines Fire Department and the Iowa National Guard. The Camp takes place July 28-August 3 at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa. Over the course of the week, the camp counselors, will challenge campers to push their boundaries and discover potential career opportunities with activities and guest speakers.

You will receive:

  • Hands on training in firearms/munitions, defensive tactics, hydrant and hose handling, search and rescue drills, and CSI skills.

  • Daily physical training exercises to prepare for professional physical requirements

  • Career panels and guest speakers including local heroes, emergency leaders and elected officials.

  • Training and drills in firefighting, law enforcement and military exercises and decision making.

Johns Hopkins University - Global Health Leaders Virtual Conference /

Summer of 2024

The John's Hopkins University Global Health Leaders Conference is a virtual summer program held via Zoom. Typically, programming starts in June and ends by August, with 1-2 virtual events per week (mostly held on weekends)

What is Global Health? : Global Health is the area of study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for people worldwide.

Who can register and attend? The conference is for High School Students in Grades 9-12. Students interested in pursuing a health career, global health, medicine or public health.

Dates? Starts in June and ends in August

Dordt University

Dordt University has a new partnership with John Deere and AgriVision Equipment Group. Beginning in the fall of 2024, Dordt will offer an Associate's Degree in becoming a John Deere Dealership Technician. The maximum tuition price will be $8,150/ year.

Graduates of Dordt's Ag Service Tech program will be prepared to diagnose and repair all types of John Deere agricultural equipment by learning electrical and computer diagnostics, engine and exhaust systems, hydrostatic systems, and more.
